Stocks end slightly higher to begin 2019 as Nasdaq bags five-day winning streak

Stocks finished slightly higher Wednesday in a turbulent trading session after global growth concerns were offset by a sharp rebound in oil prices. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.13% was up by 0.1% to end near 2,510, based on preliminary numbers. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.08% picked up around 19 points, or 0.1%, to 23,346. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP, +0.46% ended higher by around 0.5% to around 6,666. Soft readings in manufacturing purchasing managers’ indexes across the eurozone and Asia triggered fears over a slowing world economy. Yet rising prices for crude futures later pushed equities off their session lows. As for company news, shares for Tesla Inc. TSLA, -6.81% fell 7% after the maker of electric cars reported fourth-quarter deliveries that were below analysts’ expectations.
